A Life Full of Victories

When Ann Hertel was first referred to Abilities First (then known as REHAB Programs, Inc.) for emergency placement nearly 20 years ago, she was labeled as a “problem child.” Diagnosed with intellectual disabilities resulting from fetal alcohol syndrome, her defiant behavior was putting her at risk for serious problems in the future. However, the difference in Ann was almost immediate when her care was turned over to Abilities First.

One of Ann’s service providers soon discovered her passion and skill for sports and introduced her to Special Olympics. Another staff person provided Ann with skis so she could compete in the Nordic Skiing competition. Her victories at Special Olympic events were just the beginning of Ann’s life achievements. With the help of her Abilities First Job Coach, Ann secured a job as an assembler at a local business and she drives herself to work each day in a new car she bought on her own. She eventually moved from a supported apartment, which she shared with another woman with disabilities, to her own condominium that she recently purchased. In 2007 Ann was named Woman Athlete of the Year by Special Olympics New York, Hudson Valley Region and speaks publicly as a “Global Messenger” for the organization. This year she will be traveling to Colorado and Utah to train for the next round of competitive events. While Nordic Skiing remains her World Game Sport, Ann has also received Special Olympic certification in volleyball, bocce ball and bowling. A warm and happy person that is looked up to by her peers, Ann finds great joy in helping and socializing with her neighbors with disabilities in her apartment complex.

Between her active social life, work and her Special Olympic activities, Ann lives a full and rewarding life. She continues to receive services from Abilities First support staff that check in on her regularly and step in when she needs help with more complex life issues, such as personal financial management.

“The happiest moment of my life was when I was able to be independent and live on my own. If it wasn’t for REHAB (Abilities First), I don’t know where I’d be today - I would have a hard life!” -- Ann Hertel
