Funded by NYSOPWDD and the only program of its kind in the area, the LSEC takes a proactive approach to transitioning young adults with disabilities into adulthood. Central to the Center’s success is a focus on helping these young adults acquire important life skills and decision-making abilities critical to their long-term success and independence. This supplemental day habilitation program, serving ages 18-30, emphasizes person-centered planning, identifying goals specific to each individual and providing positive guidance as they work to achieve them with the support of a mentor. In addition, they benefit from socialization with their peers and have full access to the Center’s recreational activities – and their newfound friends – five days a week. Indeed it will surely serve as a model for similar programs in years to come.
