PLANNED GIVING OPTIONS
While most donors are unfamiliar with the methods of gifting mentioned below, these options are generally not complicated. Many people do not have a financial consultant with whom they have regular contact and a firm relationship. We at REHAB have made special arrangements with volunteers (from the professional community who are familiar with REHAB and our needs) to help you define and support your desire to donate to your community.
If you are contemplating a gift to REHAB, we can offer a prospective donor an opportunity to connect with these professionals to assist with your estate planning. This plan will ensure that your gift is part of a process that will define and protect your family's future. All too often, one's financial planing decisions are made piecemeal and rarely encompass the total picture. At REHAB, we want to be sure that your decision to donate is providing you with the greatest benefit possible.
Gifts of Real Estate
A gift of a residence is potentially a gift of a home for an individual with a disability. A gift of a building can potentially become a day services location. Consult your tax advisor for deductibility of this type of gift.
Parents of a child with a disability have expressed a desire to have their children stay in their own home after they are gone. Such arrangements can be made with REHAB. Guardianship is important to many families. We are available to assist families in guardianship planning efforts.
Bequests and Beneficiary Designations
Including REHAB in your Will is truly one way of leaving a legacy that will be both appreciated and used wisely for our future development. Your Will can state a specific item, dollar amount, or percentage of your total estate to be contributed to REHAB after attending to the necessities of settling your affairs.
Your choice to include REHAB in your Will can occur at the time of its writing or by simply adding a codicil (amendment) to your current Will. REHAB's planned giving volunteer professionals are prepared to assist donors with the appropriate language to create such a gift, although we urge that independent legal counsel be sought when preparing a Will or Trust.
Gifts of Securities & Cash
Naturally, a donor may contribute cash to REHAB's Endowment Fund. Gifts of cash are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
Many donors find an advantage in donating highly appreciated securities in an effort to provide significant tax-deductions to their family while supporting their community. Gifts of highly appreciated securities, such as stock held for one year or more, may enable the donor to gain a tax deduction for the full market value of the position, and avoid capital gains affiliated with appreciated stock.
Gifts through Trusts and the Endowment
Estate and Trust gifts are truly a flexible way to support your community. Trusts give a donor the greatest control over their assets and as such have many forms. Most will provide the donor with income for life and/or the life of your spouse or other beneficiary. The following example outlines one of the options that can not only provide a donation that generates a lifetime income, but possibilities for a generous tax deduction. Our staff, in cooperation with your attorney and tax adviser, can make arrangements for a Trust tailored to meet your family's personal and philanthropic desires.
Donors Gross Estate
Charitable donation to REHAB in form of trust
(donor receives possible tax deduction)
Donation reinvested to generate income supporting any of donor's needs, typically pays for life insurance to replace assets donated.
Income purchases life insurance...typically in excess of donation, Policy will be held in an insurance trust to remove proceeds from a donor's estate.
1. Donor's heirs receive full value at death... benefit without restrictions at donor's death.
2. Original donation now flows into the REHAB endowment from first Trust created.
